Leadership appointment reinforces Pullman’s commitment to inclusive excellence and premium leisure travel experiences

Pullman Cape Town is proud to announce the appointment of Thuthukile Moloto as its new General Manager. A seasoned leader with global credentials and local roots, she returns home following nearly two years in Saudi Arabia, where she served as Cluster Director of Quality at Marriott International’s Sindalah, part of the NEOM mega-project in Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk Province.

Her return marks a powerful “homecoming” for a rising hospitality talent, and signals Pullman Cape Town’s continued investment in inclusive leadership and world-class guest experiences.

Enhancing leisure travel experiences

Pullman Cape Town – the first Pullman hotel in South Africa – has quickly established itself as a premium base in the Mother City, setting benchmarks for guest experience, design, and service. Perfectly positioned at the heart of one of Africa’s top-performing tourism cities, it continues to attract both leisure and business travelers seeking a dynamic blend of location, style, and momentum. With Thuthukile Moloto now joining the leadership team, Pullman Cape Town is poised to build on its strong foundation and ongoing success.

In 2024, Cape Town was named Africa’s Leading City Destination (World Travel Awards) for the fourth consecutive year. And in 2025, it topped Time Out’s global list as Best City in the World, based on feedback from more than 18,000 residents worldwide across culture, food, nightlife, affordability, happiness, and overall atmosphere.

“Pullman merges business-ready infrastructure with lifestyle-led design, all set against one of the continent’s most iconic backdrops,” said Willie Williams, Area Director Sales & Marketing: Pullman Cape Town. “Thuthukile joins us not only as an exceptional operator but also as an inspiring voice within a broader shift toward representative leadership across our industry.”

Thuthukile brings more than 15 years of cross-functional hospitality experience across Africa and the Middle East, including senior roles launching or rebranding properties under major international brands such as Marriott International and Protea Hotels. She has managed diverse teams and overseen operations at flagship city hotels, lifestyle destinations, and large-scale resort projects, demonstrating expertise in both operational excellence and guest engagement.

Her most recent position saw her leading quality operations within NEOM – the world’s most ambitious tourism development zone – where she was responsible for upholding rigorous international standards while adapting to new markets. This breadth of experience has shaped her belief that service excellence must be deeply human-centered, intertwining innovation with genuine care.

“My time working abroad changed my understanding of what true hospitality means,” said Moloto. “If we take that level of detail-driven care and pair it with South Africa’s trademark warmth, especially here in Cape Town, we’ll be unstoppable.”

As General Manager, Thuthukile is committed to positioning Pullman Cape Town as the definitive destination for both leisure and business travelers. Her vision centers on creating memorable guest experiences that incorporate international best practices with authentic local touches, deepening sustainable operations, and building an empowered team culture through mentorship and continuous development. She is most excited about introducing guests from around the world to the essence of South Africa’s Mother City, and about curating experiences at Pullman that reflect both the city’s energy and its distinctive sense of welcome.

Thuthukile’s arrival also coincides with Accor’s expanding She Leads initiative, a global movement dedicated to unlocking female potential through mentorship-driven programming focused on empowerment, equity, and collective progress.

As She Leads gains traction across regions – with recent events held at Pullman in Nairobi and Jeddah – Thuthukile’s appointment underscores Accor’s long-standing commitment to building inclusive pipelines into executive leadership roles.

“As a woman leading a premium property like this one,” Thuthukile shared, “I hope my journey inspires other young professionals to see what’s possible when they’re supported by strong mentors, meaningful opportunities, and courageous ambition.”

The 7th annual International Tourism Film Festival Africa (ITFFA) celebrates excellence in film and video production – and its powerful role in destination mark

One of the world’s most remote inhabited islands has triumphed on the global stage as St Helena Tourism’s breathtaking film Come and Find Me won the Gold Award in the Tourism Destination (International) category at the prestigious International Tourism Film Festival Africa (ITFFA) in Sandton on 6 June.

This achievement follows the film’s earlier success in Japan, where it received a Director’s Choice special award at the Japan World’s Tourism Film Festival (JWTFF).

Jonathan Passaportis, Head of Tourism for St Helena, said: “Winning gold at ITFFA was a special moment for everyone involved in the production – and well-deserved recognition for the director Darren Peens, who attended the ceremony with actress Katie-Raye Williams. We’re thrilled!”

For Passaportis, Come and Find Me showcases what makes St Helena Island so special, including its unique natural heritage, adventurous activities, and bucket-list appeal.

“The film represents a bold departure from traditional tourism marketing, using narrative-driven storytelling to captivate audiences and celebrate the wonders of St Helena, for example, the rugged coastline, stunning landscapes, marine life – including the island’s famous whale sharks, known locally as “bone sharks” – history, and cultural appeal,” says Passaportis. “We hope this award will introduce St Helena Island to new audiences, eco-conscious travellers, and those looking for an adventure unlike any other.”

ITFFA, now in its 7th year, has established itself as the premier tourism film festival in Africa, receiving over 4,000 film entries from 94 countries since its inception. The festival celebrates how film tourism drives economic growth and destination appeal, with a focus on how high-profile productions contribute to job creation and increased tourism arrivals.

For St Helena, an island of just 47 square miles in the South Atlantic with a population of approximately 4,000 locals, this victory over entries from much larger (and more accessible) destinations reinforces its growing reputation for off-the-beaten-path journeys and remarkable natural wonders.

“This gold award shows that St Helena‘s unique character and location are exactly what makes us shine on the global stage,” added Passaportis. “We invite travellers to come and find us – and experience what St Helena Island has to offer.”

A fresh chapter in culinary direction – with women leading the way

Pullman Cape Town has appointed Melissa Stevens as its new Executive Chef – a move that reinforces the hotel’s growing reputation as one of the city’s most food-forward hospitality brands.

With years of experience in some of South Africa’s most notable kitchens, including at Morgenster Estate, Stevens will step into her new role leading all culinary operations across the Pullman Cape Town property, from curated events to everyday dining experiences.

“My cooking has always been about comfort and connection,” says Stevens. “This role is an opportunity to bring that philosophy into an iconic space, with menus that evolve with seasonality while staying rooted in both simplicity and bold flavour.”

Her arrival comes at a pivotal moment for Pullman Cape Town’s food & beverage identity, which has continued to evolve since its inception in 2023. For example, the hotel recently opened Konnichiwa (a Japanese-style sushi bar already drawing local regulars) and participated in Restaurant Week South Africa.

“Melissa brings a balance of technical talent and warmth, as well as creativity and strong leadership into our kitchen,” says Raynor Damons, Director of Food and Beverage at Pullman Cape Town. “She represents exactly where we’re going: premium hospitality led by real people doing meaningful work – especially women.”

Pullman Cape Town currently employs more women than men across its team – including several heads of department – making it well-positioned to support Accor’s Global commitment to gender equity through initiatives like #SheLeads. The programme celebrates inclusive leadership across Africa and the Middle East by spotlighting diverse voices shaping tomorrow’s hospitality landscape.

“As Cape Town grows its reputation on the global stage, we’re evolving with it – not just through design or service, but through who leads our spaces,” added Damons. “Our vision is rooted in inclusion. We believe diverse teams create richer experiences for everyone who walks through our doors.”

The Stellenbosch community-based tourism social enterprise, Township and Village, was awarded GOLD at the Africa Responsible Tourism Awards, at WTM on 10 April 2025.

Township and Village is a tourism social enterprise that develops and sells community-based cultural and historical experiences for tourism entrepreneurs who deliver the products in their communities, in and around Stellenbosch.

The Township and Village social enterprise was co-founded by socio-economic development specialist Nicolette Booyens and the non-profit Stellenbosch Entrepreneur and Enterprise Development Trust (SEED) in July 2018 to promote local economic development through tourism. The social enterprise start-up was funded by Stellenbosch Municipality, Stellenbosch University, Old Mutual Foundation and Greater Stellenbosch Trust (GST).

The purpose of the social enterprise is to create market access for community-based tourism entrepreneurs and to develop high-quality, authentic, and culturally significant tourism experiences. “This initiative gives expression to the South African tourism-led economic development strategy and is a blueprint for successful community-based tourism development”, says co-founder and Regenerative Tourism lead at Visit Stellenbosch, Nicolette Booyens.

Visit Stellenbosch partnered with Township and Village in 2020, as part of their Regenerative Tourism drive, and provides strategic tourism consultation, marketing support and product development funding through the Cape Winelands District Municipality LTA and BR&E funding programmes.

Rene Momberg was appointed to manage the social enterprise in June 2022, and together with Leana Kotze of SEED and the ongoing support of GST, they have grown the entity to new heights. “We are thrilled to share that we’ve achieved something truly incredible at Township and Village! This recognition from WTM Africa is not just a personal milestone for me, but evidence of our team’s passion, dedication, and commitment to sustainable tourism. Township and Village will continue to bring visitors into community-based spaces by creating meaningful experiences that enlighten, teach, discover, entertain and create community heritage recognition. Thank you for the unwavering support of our Joint Venture partner, Visit Stellenbosch, and all of our funders that have helped to make this a reality.”, says Rene Momberg Head of Growth, Experiences and Strategic Partnerships of Township and Village.

Township and Village is a social enterprise with sustainability as a central goal and positioned to alleviate the two biggest problems emerging tourism entrepreneurs face, which are product development and access to formal tourism markets.

Township and Village offers an extensive range of unique experience products, each operated by one or multiple independent service providers (tourism entrepreneurs) that benefit directly from the trade procured. To find out more, visit https://townshipandvillage.co.za/.

“Stellenbosch is leading the way in tourism growth in South Africa, attracting an enviable visitor profile. The reality is that this growth doesn’t always translate into financial benefits for community-based tourism entrepreneurs. The challenge lies in limited market access, which leads to a low consumption rate of local offerings.

That’s why, together with our partners, we’re committed to driving systemic change through our Regenerative Tourism Strategy — focusing on community-based enterprise development, youth employment, deeper sector integration, and truly sustainable practices. It’s not just about growth, but about inclusive, lasting impact.” says Visit Stellenbosch CEO, Annemie Liebenberg

Ultimately, it takes a village to bring about meaningful change, and the multi-dimensional partnership approach in Stellenbosch is aligned with the objective of Sustainable Development Goal #17: “Partnerships for the goals”. Township and Village attest to the commitment and integration of the Stellenbosch tourism industry, local government, education providers and civil society.

Cape Town’s inner gets its own must-visit sushi bar as Pullman Cape Town City Centre welcomes Konnichiwa – a relaxed yet refined take on top-tier Japanese cuisine made for locals and travellers alike.

Opening this March at Pullman Cape Town, Konnichiwa brings a laid-back yet flavourful take on sushi to the heart of the city. Ideally located at street level, it’s a relaxed spot to slip into between exploring Cape Town’s galleries, markets, and historic streets—whether it’s a quick meal before an afternoon of sightseeing, a long lunch soaking up the city’s energy, or an easy dinner before heading upstairs to Ghibli Bar for sundowners. Fresh, laid-back, and welcoming to all, Konnichiwa keeps things relaxed with a no-reservations policy.

A Taste of Connection in the Heart of Cape Town

In Japanese culture, Konnichiwa isn’t just “hello” – it’s about bringing people together over food and shared moments. That same spirit defines everything at Pullman’s newest culinary concept, from beautifully prepared sushi plates to its relaxed setting that encourages spontaneous get-togethers.

Seamless stays with total peace of mind: Pullman Cape Town earns top safety certification

At Pullman Cape Town City Centre, Table Mountain views and world-class hospitality now come with an added layer of assurance – certification as one of the safest hotels in the world. The hotel has achieved Safehotels Premium Certification, placing it among the world’s most secure and well-prepared properties, where exceptional safety protocols meet uncompromising attention to guest wellbeing.

Safehotels conducts independent audits to certify hotels that meet the highest security standards, work with leading international hotel chains and are recognised by corporate travellers and hotel buyers worldwide. Through partnerships with International SOS, a global leader in Health & Security Risk Management, and endorsements from organisations such as the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), the certification is widely trusted as a benchmark for safety and preparedness.

Safehotels operates in 71 countries across 203 cities and is trusted by some of the world’s biggest hotel brands. Their Global Hotel Security Standard evaluates over 230 criteria on-site – including water quality testing, food hygiene protocols, fire prevention systems, emergency response plans, and staff training – to ensure internationally recognised safety standards.

“What sets Safehotels certification apart is its holistic approach. From the moment guests step into Pullman Cape Town, they’re wrapped in an invisible blanket of care that extends far beyond the usual hospitality touchpoints. While they might not see the measures that make their stay safer, they’ll feel the difference – whether they’re here for an adventure-packed holiday, a cruise stopover, or a business trip that needs to run like clockwork,” says Jaco Bekker, Security Manager at Pullman Cape Town City Centre.

“Achieving Safehotels Premium Certification demonstrates our commitment to going the extra mile regarding guest safety and wellbeing,” adds Bekker. “For corporate clients needing to demonstrate they are fulfilling duty-of-care obligations when sending employees abroad, as well as families simply seeking a relaxing holiday, this Safehotels certification provides a globally recognised standard of assurance regarding guest wellbeing.”

Safehotels certification aligns with Accor’s commitment to redefining hospitality across Africa. With ten more Accor properties set to achieve certification by 2025, Pullman Cape Town is helping set new global standards for guest wellbeing.

“As the first Pullman brand in South Africa by the Accor Group, we achieved Premium status within a year of opening. But Safehotels is about more than just compliance – it’s about our passion for hospitality and ensuring that every guest feels secure and comfortable from the moment they arrive,” explains Willie Williams, Area Director of Sales & Marketing at Accor – Pullman Cape Town.

“Our guests are here to enjoy Cape Town at its best. They should be able to focus on making memories rather than worrying about safety or health concerns. This certification reflects our dedication to providing peace of mind so guests can fully enjoy everything this incredible city offers,” he adds.

“When a guest stays with us, they can rest assured that everything – from water quality and hotel dining to the rooftop pool and food hygiene in our four restaurants and bars – meets the highest international standards of fire, life, and safety,” concludes Williams.

Tourism Seychelles has successfully concluded a strategic media briefing in Johannesburg, South Africa, where Principal Secretary Sherin Francis presented the destination’s dynamic vision for 2025, highlighting significant developments set to enhance the archipelago’s tourism offering.

The exclusive breakfast session, held at Proud Mary Modern Eatery + Wine Bar in Rosebank, brought together key South African media representatives for an insightful discussion on Seychelles’ future developments and upcoming major events.

During the session, Mrs. Francis unveiled several landmark initiatives, including new luxury hotel developments, an extensive collection of boutique properties and small homegrown products, as well as the new Seychelles Tourism Grading Programme, reinforcing Seychelles’ commitment to maintaining its position as a premier holiday destination.

Among the key highlights of the presentation were discussions surrounding Seychelles’ sporting calendar for the year ahead. Mrs. Francis provided details regarding the upcoming FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, alongside signature events such as the Seychelles Sailing Challenge and the Seychelles Nature Trail, positioning the destination as a hub for world-class sporting events.

The Tourism Seychelles team also seized the opportunity to generate excitement for the upcoming 40th Festival Kreol in October 2025. Mrs. Francis mentioned that the country is committed to ensuring it remains one of the most iconic events on the Seychelles socio-cultural calendar every year, making sure to engage visitors and keep the festival top of mind.

“Our engagement with the South African media market is crucial as we continue to strengthen our presence in this key region,” said Mrs. Francis. “The exciting developments and events planned for 2025 will enhance our tourism offering while creating significant opportunities for cultural exchange and economic growth in our islands.”

The briefing also showcased new cultural experiences designed to offer visitors authentic encounters with Seychellois heritage, responding to the growing demand for meaningful travel experiences.

This media engagement forms part of Tourism Seychelles’ broader strategy to maintain strong relationships with key market partners and ensure consistent, high-quality communication about the destination’s offerings and developments.

The 2024 Cape to St Helena Yacht Race fleet has returned to Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC), completing an epic 1,700-nautical-mile journey across the South Atlantic that tested crews’ resilience and sailing prowess. The race, which departed Cape Town on December 28, stands as one of the most challenging offshore adventures available to both amateur and seasoned sailors in the region.

Flica, skippered by veteran sailor Rijk Kuttel, claimed overall victory and the coveted Governor’s Cup Trophy with a corrected time of 11 days, 23 hours, 21 minutes. In an exhilarating finish, Atalanta, co-skippered by Gerry Hegie and Heye Daun, secured Line Honours as first to cross the finish line.

“This race exemplified the true spirit of ocean racing – combining fierce competition with remarkable camaraderie,” said David Garrard, RCYC Vice Commodore and Race Chairman. “The fleet demonstrated exceptional seamanship throughout, facing everything from challenging light winds at the start to testing Atlantic conditions.”

Key highlights:

· Seven-year-old twins Peter and Vera Halling aboard Magic Dragon became the youngest competitors in race history, winning the Ambrose Family Trophy.

· A nail-biting final sprint between Flica and Atalanta created one of the closest finishes in the event’s 28-year history.

The eight-boat fleet experienced varying weather conditions during their 10- to 13-day crossing, showcasing both tactical decision-making and endurance. Upon reaching St Helena, competitors were welcomed as honoured guests, with Governor Nigel Phillips hosting a gala dinner at historic Plantation House.

“The hospitality shown by the Saints was extraordinary,” said Line Honours winner Heye Daun. “St Helena offers a special combination of sailing challenge and cultural experience that makes this race truly one-of-a-kind.”

During their island stay, crews explored Napoleon’s exile residence, hiked volcanic peaks, and enjoyed world-class snorkelling, cementing the race’s reputation as both a competitive event and an unforgettable adventure.

The island remains a bucket-list destination for many, explains Matt Joshua, Head of Tourism for St Helena. “It’s always a privilege to welcome visitors to St Helena, by boat or by air! We know the island has captured their hearts and we hope to welcome them – plus families and friends – back soon!”

Several key partners supported the race, including Groot Constantia Wine Estate – South Africa’s oldest wine estate, which provided commemorative individually-boxed bottles of prized wine – along with MACS Shipping, Zed Core, Southern Ropes, and Associated Rigging.

“The success of this race relies on our generous sponsors, who share our vision for adventure and excellence – a big thank you to each and every one of them,” noted Garrard.

Looking ahead, preparations are already underway for the 2026 edition. “We’re seeing growing international interest in this unique ocean racing challenge,” said Garrard. “The combination of competitive sailing, adventure, and the chance to visit one of the world’s most remote inhabited islands creates an irresistible draw for sailors worldwide.”

The next Cape to St Helena Race is scheduled for December 2026. For race information and entry details, visit www.capetosthelena.co.za.

Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank, now open in the iconic Bank building in the heart of Rosebank, has unveiled its new look as the property is reimagined under Hyde’s signature aesthetic. The 131-room hotel celebrates a playful balance of urban sophistication and bohemian earthy design.

Coming to life as more than just a place to stay, Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank showcases local music with gigs and DJ sets capturing the energy of the neighbourhood’s social scene. Following hot on the heels of Hyde London City’s opening, this property marks another milestone in Hyde Hotels’ global expansion. From its beginnings as an LA nightlife pioneer in 2005, Hyde has evolved to stand for community, creativity and that unmistakable laid-back luxe feeling.

At the heart of the transformation by Oniro Studios, is a striking new art collection that puts Joburg’s emerging creative talent in the spotlight. The reception area invites guests into the bold world of Hyde with a show-stopping wall tapestry by Liz Groble and boho-inspired lighting, bringing warmth, texture and pattern to the space. Hyde’s signature endless sofa completes the lobby, set against the backdrop of a 6m long bespoke screen with over 1,200 handmade ceramic beads.

Other artworks by rising stars such as Githan Coopoo and Hanna Noor Mahomed inject vibrancy throughout the public spaces. Guests can expect ceramic totems by Paloma standing proud in the corridors, while beaded vases from Ananta x Monkeybiz and statement pieces like Water Dixon’s gradient mirrors and Studio Kalki’s custom pieces demand Instagramworthy attention.

Guest rooms have been updated to create a serene escape for guests, blending neutral textures with earthy tones and bold patterns creating a perfect balance of comfort and style. Each room is home to a try-on wall which offers guests the opportunity to complete their outfit with items such as beautiful glass beads and woven fans. Bathrooms have been splashed with colour and pattern, creating a festival inspired, summer feel throughout.

“This makeover really captures our vision for Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank,” says Jessica Redinger, General Manager at Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank. “From our try-it-on wall showcasing local makers to our boho bathrobes and custom-curated playlists, every corner has been reimagined to bring people together. It’s that festival feeling that runs through all Hyde properties, but with a distinct South African soul. We wanted to create somewhere for visitors and locals to enjoy – whether you’re here for a power meeting, sundowners, or a weekend staycation.”

Existing eatery, Proud Mary, is one of Johannesburg’s most beloved spots for all-day dining and wine bar vibes. Looking ahead to 2025, Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank will expand its food and beverage offering with a show-stopping summer terrace. Building on Proud Mary’s established popularity, this new al fresco space will add another dimension to Rosebank’s social scene, creating the perfect backdrop for all occasions, from energising brunches to sunset cocktails.

For the business crowd, there’s seamless access to Workshop17’s slick co-working setup, complete with hot desks, private offices and meeting rooms. Guests looking for space to recharge or work out, can also take advantage of 24/7 complimentary access to the multistudio fitness suite during their stay.

The Hyde Hotel offers an excellent gym that makes it easy for guests to maintain their fitness routines while traveling for both work and leisure. Whether you’re looking to stay in shape during a business trip or keep active while enjoying some time off, the gym provides state-ofthe-art equipment, a clean and motivating environment, and plenty of space to work out.
