Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel, today announced a commission with British digital artist Dominic Harris, to create an interactive work of art exclusively for the soon-to-debut Norwegian Viva, sister ship to NCL’s record-breaking Norwegian Prima.
The work, titled “Every Wing Has a Silver Lining”, will be on display in Norwegian Viva’s Metropolitan Bar, the brand’s signature sustainable bar, and will feature Harris’ iconic butterfly motifs. Each silver-winged digital butterfly will dynamically respond throughout the day to passing movement, creating engagement with the viewer.
“Every Wing Has a Silver Lining” is Harris’ biggest ever piece in terms of physical size – spanning 52 feet in length – making it one of the largest real-time digital interactive artworks to exist in terms of raw processing power that is fully interactive to the movement and the touch of viewers and passers-by.
“We believe that art can be a transformative element in the guest experience,” says Gary Anslow, Senior Director of Sales, UK&I at Norwegian Cruise Line. “With the introduction of the new Prima Class, we’ve taken the integration of art into our ship’s overall design to new heights. Following the successful debut of Norwegian Prima, we are extremely excited for our guests to get to know Norwegian Viva as well as the breath-taking work of Dominic Harris.”
“We are delighted to be unveiling our first interactive fine art digital piece on board Norwegian Viva this summer,” says Sarah Hall, NCL Art Director for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) Ltd. “Dominic’s creative vision for this unique and special piece captivated us from the outset, and we knew that the concept and design would seamlessly complement the Metropolitan Bar. I hope that guests feel as mesmerised interacting with Dominic’s art as much as I do.”
Dominic Harris says, “As an artist, I’m thrilled by the idea of uncovering the inner child hidden within every adult’s heart! I wish my artwork to act as a mirror, reflecting both the onlooker’s outer self and my own fascination of the incredible ‘butterfly effect’ that weaves its way through our existence.
I want each viewer to feel that their interaction with “Every Wing has A Silver Lining” is an exhilarating dance with something vast, powerful, and truly significant!”
Hall continues, “At NCL, we believe in the strong connection of art and travel, and showcase not only works from well-known international artists, but also champion emerging artists from around the world.”
Set to debut this summer, Norwegian Viva will feature The Concourse – an impressive art walk on Ocean Boulevard, featuring six modern sculptures from artists including Kevin Box, Arik Levy, and Sophie Elizabeth Thompson.
Norwegian Viva will feature the most spacious accommodations of any new cruise ship in the contemporary segment, elevated specialty dining restaurants including Palomar and Nama, and the return of experiences like The Rush and The Drop, the fastest free-fall drop dry slides at sea, as well as the three-level Viva Speedway.
Norwegian Viva will begin sailing Mediterranean itineraries in August 2023, homeporting in key Southern European port cities, including Lisbon, Portugal; Venice (Trieste) and Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy; and Athens (Piraeus), Greece. She will then sail the Southern Caribbean for her 2023-2024 Winter Season offering warm-weather getaways from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
