Five nations, one birding destination in Africa’s largest conservation area

For the first time, five nations – Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe – are marketing their shared conservation estate as a single tourism destination. The Great Kavango Zambezi Birding Route, launched in February 2026 and presented jointly at ITB Berlin 2026 this week, is the first tangible product of that ambition: a cross-border avitourism experience spanning over 650 bird species across the world’s largest trans frontier conservation area.

“No single country in this region can offer what the five Partner States offer together. The birding route makes that case in the most concrete way possible – 650 species, 12 key areas, ancient migration corridors, and a certified guide network to bring it to life,” said Dr Nyambe Nyambe, Executive Director of the Kavango Zambezi TFCA Secretariat.

The route connects 12 key birding areas across the Kavango Zambezi Trans Frontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA), tracing ancient migration corridors that follow the life-giving waterways – the Kavango, Zambezi, Chobe, Kwando and Kafue river systems – that sustain both resident and migratory bird populations. These are the same river systems that give the destination its new unified brand identity and its ‘Rivers of Life’ positioning.

The scale of the product is considerable. Birders can move between Botswana’s Okavango Delta wetlands and Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park woodlands within a single itinerary, with suggested routes available at UncoverKavangoZambezi.com.

A hosted international press expedition documented 215 bird species across the region – including 43 species recorded for the first time by experienced international birders, a figure that speaks directly to the route’s credentials among serious avitourists.

Ted-Floyd-African-Golden-Oriole

A product built for the trade

The birding route has been structured with commercial viability at its centre. More than 100 registered Birding Route Ambassadors – operators, guides, lodges and tourism stakeholders – are involved in promoting the route across the region, having recognised its potential as a differentiating product in an increasingly competitive regional market.

Critically, the infrastructure to support demand is being built in parallel. 69 birding guides have completed intensive 12-day certification programmes through partnerships including BirdWatch Zambia, BirdLife Zimbabwe, BirdLife South Africa, BirdLife Botswana and Namibia Nature Foundation.

The aim is to ensure that the calibre of interpretation on the ground matches what international birders expect from an established avitourism destination.

“Avitourism represents one of the fastest-growing segments in nature-based travel worldwide,” said Dr Nyambe. “This route positions Kavango Zambezi alongside established avitourism destinations like Costa Rica and Ecuador, but with the unique advantage of cross-border scale – and a community of local guides and ambassadors who are equipped to deliver truly expert-led experiences.”

Tourism operators can access co-branding tools, professional marketing assets in five languages, suggested itineraries, video content through the ‘Rivers of Life’ series, and guide certification resources through the dedicated Trade Hub at UncoverKavangoZambezi.com. Registration is free.

With 36 protected areas spanning an area larger than France and Germany combined, the Kavango Zambezi TFCA represents a scale of natural diversity that few destinations globally can match. For operators building southern Africa itineraries, the birding route provides a structured, commercially supported mechanism to unlock that diversity across borders.

This unified brand brings together the five partner states to market their shared conservation area as a single tourism destination under the ‘Rivers of Life’ slogan, which reflects the interconnected river systems that sustain this vast ecosystem and the wildlife corridors connecting them.

The birding route offers access to over 650 bird species across ancient migration corridors spanning the world’s largest terrestrial trans frontier conservation area.

Ted-Floyd-with-birding-guide-Pasco-Makwaza-at-Waterberry-spotting-a-Yellow-bellied-Greenbul

About Kavango Zambezi TFCA

The Kavango Zambezi Trans Frontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA) is the world’s largest terrestrial trans frontier conservation area, spanning 516,406 km² across Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Established by treaty in 2011, it encompasses 36 protected areas including national parks, game reserves and community conservancies. The TFCA is home to Africa’s largest elephant population (approximately 250,000) and includes two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Victoria Falls and the Okavango Delta.

About the Kavango Zambezi Destination Brand

The Kavango Zambezi destination brand was officially endorsed by Heads of State at the Livingstone Summit in May 2024, uniting the five partner countries under a shared tourism identity. The destination brand development has been co-funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development through KfW. The brand promotes cross-border experiences that follow natural wildlife corridors and ecological linkages rather than political boundaries, positioning the region as southern Africa’s premier tourist destination and enabling visitors to explore the continent’s cultural and natural diversity as never before.

Johannesburg: Mrs. Nicola Amanda J. Bernstein has been appointed as the 15th Minister for Tourism, becoming the second woman to hold this position in Seychelles. She was sworn in on Thursday, 6th November 2025.

In addition to leading the tourism industry, Mrs. Bernstein’s portfolio will also include Culture.

Mrs. Bernstein, a resident of Baie Lazare, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Journalism from Kingston University, London, and a Master’s degree in Diplomacy and International Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

Her career began in the United Kingdom with the International HIV and AIDS Alliance, where she also served as Liaison Officer for the Commonwealth HIV and AIDS Action Group. These early roles honed her expertise in communication, advocacy, and awareness-raising on global health issues.

Upon returning to Seychelles, Mrs. Bernstein joined the Department of Foreign Affairs as Press Attaché, a role she held for three years. During this time, she collaborated closely with the Minister’s Office and national stakeholders to enhance public understanding of the department’s work and strengthen Seychelles’ presence on the international stage.

She later served as Principal Counsellor at the Seychelles Embassy in Addis Ababa, where she was instrumental in establishing the new diplomatic mission and advancing Seychelles’ engagement with the African Union. Upon completion of her mission, she returned to Seychelles to continue her service as Principal Counsellor in the Consular Division, coordinating with consuls worldwide and assisting Seychellois citizens abroad.

In her remarks to the National Assembly, Mrs. Bernstein described her years in the Foreign Affairs service as “deeply fulfilling and formative,” highlighting how the experience contributed to her professional and personal growth.

Beyond her diplomatic career, Mrs. Bernstein brings a wealth of experience from Seychelles’ private sector, having held senior positions at Barclays Bank (now ABSA) and within the wider commercial and financial services industry. During her tenure at Barclays, she contributed to the bank’s major rebranding initiative to ABSA—one of the most significant projects undertaken at the time. She has been involved in various technical, strategic, and financial projects, with her work consistently emphasising community engagement, stakeholder relations, and corporate social responsibility.

“My journey and experience in both the private sector and diplomacy, coupled with my drive and perseverance, have shaped my commitment to share the knowledge I have gained across the various fields I’ve worked in. I am ready to keep learning, to challenge the status quo, to make a difference, and to leave things better than I found them. Most importantly, I am ready to work hand in hand with every stakeholder,” she said during her presentation to the National Assembly.

Mrs. Bernstein’s background in communications, marketing, diplomacy, and partnership development aligns strongly with the Department’s strategic priorities, particularly in strengthening destination branding, advancing sustainability, and fostering innovation within the tourism, culture, and heritage sectors.

What to Expect at ATIC 2026

This premium, paid-entry conference is designed for tourism professionals serious about turning vision into viable ventures. Key features of ATIC 2026 include:

Johannesburg – From Steve Harvey headlining FAME Week Africa to Dan Fogler gracing Comic Con Africa, RX Africa is sending a clear message: the continent’s events are about to get bigger and more impactful. Forget tired trade show formulas – RX Africa is bringing the world to Africa.

“We’re not just hosting events, we’re building platforms for lasting change,” says Carol Weaving, MD of RX Africa. ” When global icons like Steve Harvey and Dan Fogler commit to our events, it sends a powerful message about Africa’s potential. It elevates the entire experience, attracts global attention, and creates a ripple effect that benefits everyone involved.”

Harvey’s presence at FAME Week Africa 2024, taking place in Cape Town from September 1st to 7th, is especially significant. He’ll be championing the “Botswana Ignite!” initiative, a programme designed to propel the nation’s creative economy. Attendees can expect insightful keynote addresses, revealing fireside chats, and unparalleled access to one of the biggest names in global entertainment as he shines a spotlight on Africa’s rising stars.

This year’s Comic Con Africa also continues the tradition of welcoming internationally-renowned guests. Actor Dan Fogler, best known for his roles in the “Fantastic Beasts” series and “The Walking Dead,” joins the event from September 27-29th, 2024. Comic Con Africa has previously hosted heavy hitters like Anthony Daniels (Star Wars) and William Shatner (Star Trek), with more exciting guest announcements to come.

RX Africa’s commitment to attracting global game-changers extends across its diverse portfolio. For WTM Africa, a leading travel trade show, RX Africa is securing the biggest names in global tourism to share insights and drive investment in the continent’s growing travel sector. Similarly, Decorex Africa, a renowned décor and design exhibition, recently hosted a stellar line-up of top international designers, showcasing the latest trends and innovations to inspire and elevate African talent.

This strategic approach delivers multiple benefits. Attracting major international players elevates the profile of RX Africa events, drawing more media attention, sponsorships, and investment opportunities that benefit the entire continent. By providing platforms for African creatives and businesses to connect with global leaders, RX Africa facilitates knowledge sharing, mentorship, and potential collaborations that accelerate growth and innovation.

Furthermore, these high-profile events challenge preconceived notions and showcase Africa as a hub of creativity, innovation, and economic opportunity. This positive shift in global perception is key to attracting further investment and fostering long-term growth across various sectors.

The presence of Steve Harvey at FAME Week Africa 2024, along with RX Africa’s ongoing efforts to secure top talent like Dan Fogler for its events, sends a clear message: Africa is open for business, brimming with talent, and ready to take center stage.

RX Africa’s strategy of bringing global icons to its events is redefining the landscape of African trade shows and exhibitions. By creating world-class platforms that attract international attention, the company is playing a pivotal role in positioning Africa as a major player in the global creative and economic arena. This approach not only benefits the immediate participants but also contributes to the broader goal of sustainable development and economic growth across the continent.

Experience Africa, the premier trade event for the African travel industry, kicked off in London today with unprecedented attendance and engagement. The event has drawn 602 attendees from 37 countries, showcasing the growing global interest in African tourism.

The show saw a notable surge in international buyers, signalling strong interest in the continent’s diverse tourism offerings. Among the top countries represented by buyers are the UK, Belgium, USA, Netherlands, China, and Italy, underscoring the global appeal of African travel experiences. The show floor is buzzing with over 7,480 pre-scheduled appointments, reflecting a high level of engagement and anticipation among buyers eager to connect with exhibitors.

“We are the voice of Africa, and Experience Africa this week will be testament to that,” said Nigel Vere Nicoll, President of the African Travel and Tourism Association (ATTA®) during the opening address at Experience Africa on Monday morning.

“The impressive turnout of international buyers at this year’s Experience Africa is a testament to the growing recognition of Africa as a must-visit destination,” says Chris Mears, CEO of Experience Africa Events. “We’ve got a fantastic programme of content sessions and destination training, but most important, it’s about the meetings that you’re going to have, and the connections between African tourism businesses and the global travel trade.”

Experience Africa 2024 is set to be a hub for networking, knowledge-sharing and deal-making, featuring South Africa as the headline destination and the Botswana Tourism Organisation as a key sponsor.

Key highlights of this year’s event include:

A record-breaking 7,480 pre-scheduled appointments

The inaugural ATTA® for Action Awards, sponsored by the Botswana Tourism Organisation, will also take place during Experience Africa 2024. The awards programme is designed to recognise and celebrate companies that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism practices in Africa.

Experience Africa 2024 will continue over the next three days, providing a platform for networking, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration. Attendees can expect a rich programme of destination training sessions, panel discussions, and other engaging activities.

The SADC Business Council Tourism Alliance has expressed deep concern over Namibia’s proposed restrictive visa regime, which could severely hamper the country’s tourism industry and economic growth.

This policy shift appears to contradict Namibia Airports Company’s recently launched air access strategy, “Air Connect Namibia”, aimed at increasing international flights and connectivity. The implementation of stricter visa requirements could have a detrimental impact on various sectors of Namibia’s economy, including tourism, hospitality, transportation, and retail, all of which rely heavily on international visitors.

Evidence from across Africa, including success stories from Rwanda and Zambia, demonstrates that visa liberalisation significantly boosts tourism, foreign investment, and overall economic growth. A more open visa policy attracts a diverse range of visitors, including business travellers, investors, and tourists, who contribute to the economy through spending, job creation, and tax revenue. The Africa Visa Openness Index 2023 highlights that visa openness is crucial for Africa’s tourism industry, serving as a catalyst for economic growth.

“A restrictive visa regime can negatively impact the entire tourism value chain,” says Natalia Rosa, Project Lead for the SADC Business Council Tourism Alliance. “It hinders not only leisure travel but also business travel, conferences, events, education, and trade, thereby limiting overall economic growth and development.”

Several African countries, including those within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), are moving towards more liberal visa policies. Namibia risks falling behind its regional peers and losing its competitive edge as a tourist destination if it adopts a more restrictive approach.

“We urge the Namibian government to reconsider these restrictive measures and engage in dialogue with stakeholders to find solutions that balance security concerns with the need for economic growth and regional competitiveness,” adds Rosa. “Aligning visa policies with the air access strategy is essential to maximise the benefits of increased flight options and attract a larger influx of travellers. Namibia could look to successful examples like Rwanda, which has seen significant growth in its MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism sector due to visa liberalisation and investment in infrastructure.”

One of the first countries to introduce a remote working visa recognising the demand post-COVID, Namibia’s visa regime U-turn is puzzling, particularly as SADC prepares to pilot its Univisa.

Instead of tightening visa restrictions, Namibia could explore alternative solutions such as implementing more efficient visa processing systems (e.g., e-visas), targeted visa waivers for specific groups, or enhanced security measures at borders.

“All barriers to entry for international visitors must be critically examined and addressed to encourage longer stays, increase spending in the economy, and accelerate the recovery of the tourism sector,” Rosa concludes.

The SADC Business Council Tourism Alliance remains committed to supporting Namibia’s tourism industry and advocating for policies that promote sustainable growth and development.

An innovative new meetings-driven tourism event aimed at facilitating meaningful interactions between buyers and sellers across Africa’s vibrant tourism industry is being launched by On Show Solutions and Experience Africa Events, the ATTAÒ events division.

Essence of Africa will take place October 2-4, 2024 at Sarit Centre in Nairobi, Kenya and is designed to be a catalyst for creating and strengthening partnerships between Africa and source markets globally.

The African Travel and Tourism Association (ATTA®) is widely regarded as the voice of African tourism, a membership organisation that via it’s global events has connected African tourism worldwide for over 30 years. With its focus on pre-qualified buyers and On Show Solutions’ extensive global reach across key markets through its Africa Showcase, the new event will provide exhibitors unique access to buyers who are serious about doing business across the continent.

“Essence of Africa facilitates discovery of tourism products from destinations across Africa. Over the course of pre-scheduled meetings, evening networking events, insightful seminars by industry leaders, and familiarisation trips organised by exhibitors, buyers have the opportunity to explore the full range of experiences Africa has to offer and match them to client needs,” says Amanda Margison, Co-Owner of On Show Solutions.

As a private sector-led initiative, Essence of Africa is creating a platform focussed on expanding the potential of tourism across Africa by bringing together the right global buyers and committed local sellers. “We want the interactions between buyers and sellers to be engaging and to encourage long-term partnerships that drive sustainable growth for tourism companies operating in the world of Africa travel,” Margison adds.

To guide the strategic direction of Essence of Africa, the organisation has assembled an esteemed advisory board featuring:

• Mohammed Hersi, Group Director of Operations, Pollmans Tours & Safaris
• Mohanjeet Brar, Managing Director, Gamewatchers & Porini Camps
• Rajay Singh, CEO Safari Trails
• Leanne Haigh, CEO and Director of Operations, Tourvest East Africa
• Lindelwa Mthethwa, Head of Sales and Marketing, Minor Hotels Africa
• Amos Wekesa, Founder and MD of Great Lakes Safaris Limited

“We are thrilled to have assembled such a well-respected advisory board for Essence of Africa, bringing together top leaders and experts from across the African tourism industry,” says Nigel Vere-Nicoll, President of ATTAÒ.

“With decades of collective experience in areas ranging from destination marketing to tour operations, sustainable travel and beyond, these advisors will play a critical role in shaping the event to ensure it delivers maximum value for both buyers and sellers of African tourism products and services.

“Their guidance and input will make Essence of Africa a dynamic platform that fosters greater cooperation and success for all stakeholders wanting to tap into the vibrant potential of travel and tourism across this captivating continent,” Vere-Nicoll adds.

Over three days, buyers from key source markets worldwide will engage in up to 36 pre-scheduled appointments with exhibitors from across Africa to foster cooperation and explore business opportunities.

Evening networking events promise to facilitate relationship building, while a dynamic seminar programme featuring renowned industry leaders will unpack critical issues and trends shaping tourism in Africa.

According to Margison, a standout aspect of this all-Africa event will be familiarisation trips offered by exhibitors to their special part of Africa, to provide buyers first-hand experience of destinations and products across Africa, and not limited to the host country. “Experiencing the soul of our continent is the best way for buyers to match their clients with unforgettable, authentic adventures.”

Registration for Essence of Africa will open mid-February with attractive early bird rates available. For details and to reserve your spot at this landmark new platform for transacting business across Africa, email hello@eoa.travel.
