Peermont Hotels, Casinos and Resorts today announced that it has concluded a purchase agreement with Nevada-based Caesars Entertainment Corporation to acquire the Emerald Resort & Casino in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng.

Emerald Resort’s prime location on the banks of the Vaal River, coupled with its unique offerings, is perfectly aligned with Peermont’s primary objective of creating premium leisure and gaming experiences for its customers. “Peermont successfully operates 11 multi-faceted casino resorts across southern Africa, and we confidently see Emerald Resort seamlessly fitting into our core business areas,” says Nigel Atherton, Chief Executive Officer, Peermont.

Peermont considers the acquisition of Emerald Resort to be mutually beneficial as it presents great opportunities for growth and development. An additional benefit of the acquisition is that Emerald Resort will now be able to offer a wider range of rewards through Peermont’s Winners Circle loyalty programme.

Emerald Resort first opened its doors in 1997 and features a hotel with 77 rooms, and a casino that boasts 430 slot machines and 22 table games. The resort’s entertainment and leisure offerings include the Aquadome water park, exciting game park, relaxing spa and variety of restaurants.

The conclusion of the sale will require the approval of, inter alia, the Gauteng Gambling Board and Competition Authority. Once this has been completed, Peermont will embark on a full integration process. Caesars Entertainment will continue to operate the property until the transaction is complete, which subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions, is expected to be in the third quarter of 2019.

Dream Hotels & Resorts Group is celebrating an ECO Proud/ECO Excellent status achievement, following the successful implementation of an effective ECO grading system across its portfolio of 22 holiday properties in South Africa and Mozambique.

“We started with this journey towards the end of 2013,” says Nick Dickson, Dream Hotels & Resorts (DHR) Director. “Recognising that our resorts are located in eco-sensitive areas, a strategic decision was made back then to ensure we keep our impact on the environment to a minimum.”

A report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), released this week, revealed the serious effects of allowing global warming to reach 2ºC above pre-industrial levels, as opposed to curbing it at 1.5ºC – which is the level South Africa has committed to.

South Africa’s official pledge is also to reduce emissions to between 398 and 614 millions tons (Mt) of CO2 equivalents between 2025 and 2030, dropping to between 212Mt and 420Mt by 2050.

“With sustainable travel at an all-time high, it’s imperative that industry players not only follow suite, but rather drive this initiative,” he added.

DHR appointed environmental expert consultants, Energy Resource Optimisers (ERO), to develop its Sustainable Environmental Management Programme (SEMP). ERO has extensive experience in the hospitality industry.

The SEMP it has developed is aligned to the ISO 50001 best-practice standard, Dickson explained. “In practical terms, the SEMP is based on a ‘PLAN – DO – CHECK – ACT’ model. Dickson said this was similar to many other business processes, making it “easy to understand and implement at unit level”.

Fellow DHR Director, Brent Dickson, added that the SEMP developed by ERO appealed to the hotels and resorts group because improvements would be made to its overall property management strategy.

Anton Potgieter, Managing Member of ERO, maintained it was typical that, in organisations where a SEMP programme is healthy and running effectively, other areas of the business would also be managed well.

“DHR’s SEMP programme has two pillars: a facility programme and an organisational programme. The facility programme deals with everything physical such as water heaters, lighting, laundry equipment, etc. with the aim to move to the most efficient equipment over time. The organisational programme, meanwhile, addresses the group’s policies, procedures and operations.”

“We have not adopted an ‘efficiency at all cost approach’. We sought to introduce efficiency as and when the opportunity arises,” he added.

The DHR directors explained that excellent results have been achieved, as well as behavioural changes, since the inception of the programme. “It was initially implemented at six of the 22 properties, and then extended to the rest once the results were in.”

The SEMP has also delivered cost savings for the group.

“In the first two years, savings exceeded 10 percent,” they revealed. “All the resorts have energy baselines and are monitoring their consumption against occupancy on a monthly basis. Since most facilities utilise boreholes for water, we have installed water meters to get an understanding of the water consumption and costs.” The group has set a target of 200 litres per bed night sold by 2020.

Regarding waste management, DHR is currently assessing the volume and type of waste it produces, aiming to reduce water to landfill by 30 percent by 2020. Six monthly assessments are carried out at each location to an innovative scorecard to monitor progress.

“There was a need to provide recognition for the properties’ efforts, and since the SEMP programme provides a score for the progress in each of the three priority areas – energy, water and waste – it was decided to give these scores a ‘face’, which is what we refer to as the ECO Statuses, which was developed and driven by the DHR team.”

The DHR directors added: “DHR facilities are currently between ECO Proud and ECO Excellent.”

ERO has since confirmed that it is in discussions with two other hospitality clients, the City Lodge Hotel Group and ATKV Resorts, which utilise the same SEMP, to implement the ECO rating system at their properties. ERO said both had agreed in principle to adopting DHR’s ECO Status system.

ONYX Hospitality Group has signed an agreement with a joint venture company led by Panchshil Realty to launch OZO Maldives. Scheduled to open in the third quarter of 2020, the 200-villa private island resort will occupy a secluded island in the Raa Atoll, located northwest of the Maldivian capital of Male. ‏

Positioned as a family-oriented resort, OZO Maldives will bear all the signatures which define an OZO including an enhanced sleep experience, smart connectivity of personal devices in both private spaces and public areas, and curated destination and activity tips by enthusiastic and informed team members. ‏

‏Featuring design elements and experience touch points inspired by a fictitious castaway explorer named Sebastian King III, an artist and amateur sailor who was shipwrecked and lived alone on the island for eight years before allowing himself to be discovered, OZO Maldives will immerse travellers in a reinterpretation of the legacy he left behind through a series of structures, shelters and landmarks Sebastian creatively constructed from island-sourced raw materials and flotsam washed ashore over the years.‏

Highlights include an upturned Dhoni shipwreck hidden within a jungle which doubles as an activity centre, a crow’s nest-style observation tower, an abandoned lighthouse, Sebastian’s rustic home located within the kids’ club, educational sundial and weather station, and a mangrove discovery walkway.‏

The social centre of the island will be the ‘Village’, a collection of rustic driftwood styled retail and dining outlets offering art and craft workshops, bespoke ice cream and refreshments, as well as island-inspired fashions. The island’s large size and natural untouched terrain also offer family-oriented activities including adventure and biking trails, a kids’ campsite, a pitch and putt golf course and various natural and environmental features to appeal to travellers of all ages. ‏

‏Other facilities include OZO’s signature EAT all-day-dining restaurant best known for energizing breakfasts, a speciality‘ sunset experience’ restaurant, a rustic and informal ‘Victory Bar’ and floating lagoon pavilions and jungle tree-decks for private dinners. There will also be an island farm run by Maldivian islanders, offering guests natural and fresh organic produce in a unique market garden dining experience. The resort will also feature Maai Spa, a signature Thai wellness concept, a gym and yoga facility, dive centre and a large landscaped lagoon swimming pool.

Of the 200 villas at OZO Maldives, 60 villas will be located overwater while 140 villas will be located on the beach, with 50 beach villas offering larger family-friendly layouts and private plunge pools. Many of the villas will also be either interconnecting or configured with dual key access, to offer flexibility for families and groups of friends travelling together.‏
