The expanded schedule marks a significant boost to the destination’s air connectivity, enhancing travel options and supporting continued growth in visitor arrivals from key international markets.

The additional service will operate as part of the airline’s winter schedule, with the second daily flight arriving at Seychelles International Airport at 4:20 p.m. and departing for Addis Ababa at 5:50 p.m. The route will be served by a Boeing 737 aircraft, configured with 16 Business Class seats and 138 Economy Class seats, adding more than 1,000 seats per week to the market.

Ethiopian Airlines currently operates a daily non-stop service between Addis Ababa and Mahé.

Flights depart Addis Ababa Bole International Airport at 9:30 a.m. local time and land in Seychelles at 2.20 p.m., after a flight of approximately three hours and 50 minutes. The return flight bound for Addis leaves at 5.15p.m. Passengers are able to enjoy the airline’s full range of onboard services, including meals, in-flight entertainment and the ShebaMiles frequent flyer programme.

Welcoming the announcement, Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Vesna Rakic, described the additional service as a significant milestone in strengthening the destination’s international air connectivity.

“Ethiopian Airlines has become an important partner in Seychelles’ efforts to diversify its source markets, and the introduction of more than 1,000 additional seats per week will provide a welcome boost to the destination,” she said.

“The additional capacity, particularly during the festive season, will offer travellers greater flexibility and more options when planning their holidays. It aligns perfectly with our market diversification strategy and our objective of improving accessibility to Seychelles.”

Adding to the positive momentum, Turkish Airlines has resumed flights to Seychelles, marking its first summer operation to the destination in three years. Previously, the airline served Seychelles seasonally between late October and March before suspending services during the summer period. The carrier will operate three weekly flights using an Airbus A330-300, connecting Seychelles to Istanbul; one of the world’s largest aviation hubs and a key gateway to Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and North America.

As Turkish Airlines reintroduces its summer programme, the airline has implemented minor schedule adjustments during the initial launch period for commercial reasons. Until the week commencing 6 July, flights will operate twice weekly on Wednesdays and Sundays. Thereafter, the airline will increase operations with an additional weekly flight on Fridays, bringing the total to three flights per week.

The Russian market will also receive a welcome boost with Aeroflot scheduled to resume services on 8 July 2026. The airline will operate two weekly flights on Wednesdays and Saturdays, restoring additional seat capacity from one of Seychelles’ important source markets and providing greater travel options for Russian visitors seeking direct access to the islands. Commenting on the enhanced connectivity, Seychelles Tourism Board Chief Executive Officer, Ms Vesna Rakic, said:

“At a time of intense global competition for travellers, the decision by Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and Aeroflot to expand their presence in Seychelles is a strong endorsement of our destination. With increased summer capacity from key international gateways, Seychelles is reinforcing its position as one of the most accessible island destinations in the Indian Ocean. Improved air access remains a critical factor in driving visitor arrivals, and the additional capacity provided by these airlines will support demand from multiple markets while offering greater flexibility and convenience for travellers choosing Seychelles.

Now in its third edition, the event has evolved from an ambitious sporting initiative into an internationally recognised rendezvous for trail runners, adventure seekers, and nature lovers alike. The 2026 edition attracted participants from 14 countries across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, all drawn to Seychelles’ rare combination of technical trails and breathtaking scenery.

Seychelles’ Minister for Tourism, Amanda Bernstein, welcomed the overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants and highlighted the event’s growing international appeal.

“I am delighted by the feedback we continue to receive from runners. The Seychelles Nature Trail offers a rare combination of technical challenge and exceptional natural beauty. Participants are leaving with unforgettable memories and are already expressing their desire to return next year. It is inspiring to see runners from around the world discovering Seychelles through this unique adventure,” said Minister Bernstein.

Far more than a race, the 22-kilometre course offers an immersive journey through the wild beauty of Seychelles. Runners traverse the dense forests of Morne Seychellois National Park, rugged mountain paths, dramatic granite formations, and spectacular coastal viewpoints before descending into Grand Anse. The route passes through Port Glaud, Cap Ternay, Anse Major, Mare aux Cochons, Cassedent, and Tomassin, delivering over 1,200 metres of elevation gain alongside sweeping views of the Indian Ocean.

International athletes praised both the challenge and uniqueness of the course. French trail-running icon Sylvaine Cussot, who finished second in the women’s category, described the race as one of the most remarkable trail experiences she has encountered. UK participant Charly Pauly also highlighted the exceptional diversity of terrain and scenery.

Pakistan’s Wiqar Ahmad Nasir successfully defended his title for the second consecutive year, crossing the finish line in 2:11:39. South Africa’s Daniël Classen secured second place in 2:13:00, while Jonathan Quatre claimed third place, becoming the first Seychellois athlete to complete the race.

In the women’s category, South Africa’s Emily Djock claimed victory in 2:55:05, followed by Sylvaine Cussot in 3:02:05 and Seychellois athlete Aisha Radwan in 3:14:05.

What distinguishes the Seychelles Nature Trail is not only the course itself, but the destination experience surrounding it. Mrs. Bernstein, a resident of Baie Lazare, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Journalism from Kingston University, London, and a Master’s degree in Diplomacy and International Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

Her career began in the United Kingdom with the International HIV and AIDS Alliance, where she also served as Liaison Officer for the Commonwealth HIV and AIDS Action Group. These early roles honed her expertise in communication, advocacy, and awareness-raising on global health issues.

Upon returning to Seychelles, Mrs. Bernstein joined the Department of Foreign Affairs as Press Attaché, a role she held for three years. During this time, she collaborated closely with the Minister’s Office and national stakeholders to enhance public understanding of the department’s work and strengthen Seychelles’ presence on the international stage.

She later served as Principal Counsellor at the Seychelles Embassy in Addis Ababa, where she was instrumental in establishing the new diplomatic mission and advancing Seychelles’ engagement with the African Union. Upon completion of her mission, she returned to Seychelles to continue her service as Principal Counsellor in the Consular Division, coordinating with consuls worldwide and assisting Seychellois citizens abroad.

In her remarks to the National Assembly, Mrs. Bernstein described her years in the Foreign Affairs service as “deeply fulfilling and formative,” highlighting how the experience contributed to her professional and personal growth.

Beyond her diplomatic career, Mrs. Bernstein brings a wealth of experience from Seychelles’ private sector, having held senior positions at Barclays Bank (now ABSA) and within the wider commercial and financial services industry. During her tenure at Barclays, she contributed to the bank’s major rebranding initiative to ABSA—one of the most significant projects undertaken at the time. She has been involved in various technical, strategic, and financial projects, with her work consistently emphasising community engagement, stakeholder relations, and corporate social responsibility.

“My journey and experience in both the private sector and diplomacy, coupled with my drive and perseverance, have shaped my commitment to share the knowledge I have gained across the various fields I’ve worked in. I am ready to keep learning, to challenge the status quo, to make a difference, and to leave things better than I found them. Most importantly, I am ready to work hand in hand with every stakeholder,” she said during her presentation to the National Assembly.

Mrs. Bernstein’s background in communications, marketing, diplomacy, and partnership development aligns strongly with the Department’s strategic priorities, particularly in strengthening destination branding, advancing sustainability, and fostering innovation within the tourism, culture, and heritage sectors.

We caught up with Antoinette Turner, General Manager at Flight Centre Travel Group South Africa, to find out what African destinations should be on your radar this year.

Phenomena Travel | Zambia

Phenomena tourism refers to any travel planned around extraordinary – often fleeting – natural events like eclipses, meteor showers or wildlife migrations. Africa offers up the Great Wildebeest Migration in East Africa and the Zebra Migration in Botswana, but have you heard of the Kasanka Bat Migration in Zambia? The planet’s largest mammal migration happens between October and November each year, giving visitors a spectacular show as up to 10 million African straw-coloured fruit bats descend on the Kasanka National Park.

“It’s one of the natural world’s best kept secrets,” says Turner. “And combined with a walking safari in South Luangwa National Park, you’ll end up with two wildlife experiences that just can’t be matched.”

According to Turner, Proflight Zambia has increased their domestic network over the last few months and are also operating direct flights between Lusaka, Johannesburg and Cape Town – putting Zambia’s wildlife, waterfalls and hidden gems within easy reach of South African travellers.

“Zambia is visa-free for South Africans,” says Turner. “But the country has also just announced the waiver of visa requirements for nationals of an additional 53 countries, which is a real boost for tourism in the region.”

Sports Tourism | Seychelles

Sports tourism (travelling to participate in or watch a sporting event) is on the rise, with the latest Sports Tourism Global Market Report valuing sports tourism at USD 583.14 billion in 2024 – reflecting a compound annual growth rate of just over 11%.

Among this year’s sports highlights is a first for Africa: The 2025 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.

“The Seychelles already has the best beaches in the world,” says Turner. “Why not make your way to Victoria in May 2025, when you’ll be able to experience the excitement and

gees of the FIFA Beach World Cup, beautiful weather (around 25 – 30°C) and all joys and surprises of one of the smallest capitals in the world.”

Responsible Tourism | Rwanda

Overtourism continues to be a massive problem worldwide, with international travel guide Fodors publishing both their ‘No List’ and ‘Go List’ for 2025. The ‘No List’ asks travellers to avoid crowded destinations like Barcelona, Mallorca, the Canary Islands, Venice and Lisbon, while the ‘Go List’ encourages travellers to seek out quieter destinations like (drumroll please) Hermanus in the Western Cape and Kigali in Rwanda.

“It’s fantastic to see South Africa on this list,” says Turner. “And Rwanda is a brilliant option for travellers keen to explore a central African gem – or those with gorilla trekking on their bucket list. Although South Africans require a visa, it’s free on arrival.”

Soft Travel | St Helena Island

Similar to slow travel or mindful travel, soft travel is an antidote to our busy, stressful lives. It swaps packed, pressured itineraries for slow trips that unfold organically, savouring simple pleasures and prioritising rest and wellbeing – and the chance to escape, reset and rediscover what’s important.

“St Helena Island is a bucket-list destination for many,” says Turner. “Visitors are attracted by the island’s history, heritage and unique ecosystems – but many are also looking for a real escape from everyday life. And it’s perfect for walking, birding and simply ‘being’, surrounded by nature and incredible scenery.”

Turner explains that Airlink currently has seasonal flights between Cape Town and St Helena (until the end of March 2025), which augment Airlink’s weekly Johannesburg to St Helena schedule.

Heritage Revolution | Ghana

Some of the most significant UNESCO World Heritage Sites can be found in Africa, including Stone Town in Zanzibar, Tyfelfontein in the Kunene Region of Namibia, Aksum in Ethiopia, and the Amphitheatre of El Jem in Tunisia.

As heritage travel continues to grow in popularity, Ghana is just one example of an African destination working hard to spotlight its rich cultural heritage. Their “See Ghana, Wear Ghana, Experience Ghana” and “December in Ghana” campaigns have effectively showcased the country’s diverse attractions, from the Volta Region’s beaches to the historical sites of the Central Region and the Ashanti Kingdom – all holding massive appeal to modern travellers looking to immerse themselves in African music, history and cultural festivities.

“According to a UN Tourism Report, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, South Africa, Tanzania, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Eswatini, and Seychelles are Africa’s leading tourism destinations, welcoming over 50 million visitors last year,” says Turner. “They are all worth a visit, and all promise transformative travel experiences. If you haven’t yet discovered the joy of African travel, maybe 2025 will be the year!”

During his tenure, he successfully implemented the department’s marketing strategies, notably promoting Seychelles as a premier island holiday destination for American and African travellers.

Reflecting on his career, David Germain remarked, “The tourism industry is a people’s industry, and it has allowed me to meet many people of different nationalities. I have had the opportunity to travel to different countries, make numerous new friends, explore diverse cultures and lifestyles, and develop my social skills while expanding my knowledge.”

With David’s departure, the Tourism Department announced that Ms Christine Vel, Market Manager, will take on additional responsibilities of marketing operations throughout Africa, starting immediately. Starting in Port Glaud and looping around the island’s northernmost tip to end at Grand Anse, participants will traverse challenging terrain with a vertical ascent of 1210 metres and where abundant vegetation can make the trails difficult to manage. However, the natural beauty of the surroundings will make this trail an unforgettable experience.

“Our focus has been to preserve the authenticity of the natural surroundings and not to disturb the fauna and flora of the nature reserves. Going back to the origins of trail running, it is the runner who needs to adapt to the natural surroundings and not nature that needs to adapt to the runners,” says Mrs. Bernadette Willemin, Director General for Marketing at Tourism Seychelles.
