The much-anticipated new South African child passports, which would eliminate the need for minors to carry an Unabridged Birth Certificate (UBC) when travelling abroad, have been delayed.

“The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) is finalising technical modalities for the introduction of the child passports. We will announce the implementation date in due course,” Thabo Mokgola, DHA spokesperson told Inside Travel.

At the beginning of 2016, the DHA announced that the controversial new visa laws – which require all South African minors to travel with a UBC – would be replaced in favour of an updated passport for minors with printed details of both parents by February 1, 2017.

Seven months after the announced implementation date, the passports are still to be launched, and South Africans still need to carry a UBC to travel abroad with their children.
