kulula.com is proud to have gifted the magic of flying for the first time to 100-year-old Emily Sakulwa, from the Eastern Cape town of Dimbaza.

Luane Lavery, Brand Communications Manager for kulula.com says, “We overhead a discussion on talk radio that Emily has always dreamt of flying. That conversation was around the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela and we decided to celebrate the life of both Mr Mandela and Emily by helping her take to the sky for the first time. We partnered with Europecar to give her a great experience and she flew from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town to visit her children.

“We knew immediately when hearing that Emily had never flown that we wanted to help. As South Africa’s first low-cost airline we want to make flying as affordable and accessible to all, while making it fun to travel across South Africa.”

Zethu Msindo, one of Emily’s grandchildren, who’d called in to the radio show to say how much she yearned to fly, said, “I am so excited for her and seeing the great welcome that was arranged for her at the airport made me happy and so emotional.”

Speaking about her first flying experience, Emily was overwhelmed, but in good spirits. “Today I feel like a true celebrity,” she said, thanking kulula for the flight and adding that she was looking forward to seeing her children. “Enkosi kakhulu,” she beamed.
