Over R1.4m has been distributed to black female employees of Flight Centre Travel Group (FCTG) Corporate and FCM Travel Solutions, as part of its empowerment scheme. That’s an increase of 47% compared to last year.

“It really is exciting to see that the total dividend pool has increased exponentially over the years. Our number of beneficiaries has also increased from 17 in 2017 to an incredible 269 in 2019.  Not only does this speak to our goal of creating a truly broad-based empowerment scheme, it is also extremely encouraging to see the growth within our corporate brands,” says Andrew Stark, MD MEA Flight Centre Travel Group.

In 2017, the company launched a black female employee trust for its FCTG Corporate and FCM entities. The purpose of these trusts was to encourage market-share growth within the brands and to ensure that the wealth of the business is shared through a broad-based black economic empowerment solution.

Rather than having one beneficiary, Stark explains FCTG wants to drive transformation and empower a large number of people in the company. “As visionaries in the travel industry, we want to live up to the true concept of broad-based black economic empowerment.”

“Although FCTG South Africa forms part of a multinational company, we have been operating in South Africa for many years. We are firmly committed to South Africa and embrace transformation, which is why we want our employees to be beneficiaries in the shareholding of the company.”

FCM Business Leader and beneficiary of the trust, Nthabi Khabane, explains the opportunities created by the newly created ownership trust are endless. “I have to say ‘thank you’ to FCM and FCTG as a whole, as not many companies have such benefits. We are recognised and appreciated in more than one way.”

Khabane explains the pay-out has boosted staff morale and loyalty. “It’s incredible to see the excitement and happiness of my team. Not only does this benefit show appreciation, but it also encourages loyalty.”

“We are proud to have a BEE strategy that is delivering sustainable and measurable results for our customers, employees and the communities we support,” concludes Nicole Adonis, GM FCM Travel Solutions. “BEE and transformation go hand in hand with our founding principles of fairness, egalitarianism and unity. As our brand grows, members of this scheme will derive direct benefits, which in turn will translate into benefits for our customers.”
